This is a wiring diagram for a DIY 12 Volt Solar Generator. The design is flexible and allows you to install your own components as long as they are at or under the maximum sizes listed in the diagram. So feel free to look for bargains on eBay or at garage sales.
We’ve done the hard work for you by precalculating all of the cable and fuse sizes, so you can be confident in your setup. If however, you would like an extra level of safety, feel free to use larger wires in your DIY generator.

Components Needed
- Renogy 1000W Power Inverter – If you don’t already have your own, this Inverter works well for this generator
- Victron 100/30 MPPT Charge Controller – This is a solid choice Charge Controller if you don’t already have your own
- Blade Fuse Block – Blue Sea Systems – Circuit protection for your DC powered devices
- A/C Power Strip – You can easily distribute AC power with a strip like this
- 10 AWG SAE Connector and Socket – Cut these in half to have a socket and plug for DC devices
- SAE Connector to Solar MC4 Adaptor – Premade solar adaptor for SAE to MC4
- 45A Anderson Powerpole Socket – This DC socket is a better quick connect option than SAE, but sometimes not available for order
- 45A Anderson Powerpole Terminals – Terminals for connecting with Anderson Powerpole
- Anderson Powerpole to Solar MC4 Adaptor – Premade solar adaptor for Anderson Powerpole to MC4
- High output USBs Sockets – Simple and cost effective option for adding USB sockets
- Positive and Negative Busbars
- Main On/Off Switch
- Shunt – Monitor battery state of charge and prevent over discharging
- PV Switch – Circuit breaker to be used as a switch, and not circuit protection. If wiring your solar panels in series, no additional circuit protection will be needed. If wiring in parallel, you may need to install some form of circuit protection.
- Battery Cable Quick Connector
- 1 AWG Main Battery/Inverter Cable
- 4 AWG Power Cable
- 8 AWG Power Cable
- 10 AWG Power Cable
- 3 Way Lever Nuts – For installing the USB circuit in parallel

Power Inverter
Our wiring diagram is capable of using a power inverter of up to 1500W. It’s important to keep in mind that installation instructions will vary depending on the manufacturer and model of your specific power inverter.
Be sure to refer to the user manual provided by the manufacturer for detailed installation instructions and safety guidelines.
Solar Charge Controller
For this particular solar generator design, it is important to note that the maximum supported solar charge controller is 30A. For best performance, we recommend using an MPPT charge controller.
For convenient connection and disconnection of solar panels, 10AWG SAE connectors or 45A Anderson connectors can be utilized.
